Video: Okwelogu Discusses International Competition and Preparing for Her Sophomore SeasonPublished by
Cambridge, Mass. Coming off one of the most successful freshman campaigns as a thrower for the Harvard track and field team, Nikki Okwelogu spent her summer competing, and excelling, at various international events, representing Nigeria.
Earning Nigerian national champion honors in the shot, as well as runner-up accolades in the discus, Okwelogu garnered the opportunity to compete in the Commonwealth Games and the African Athletics Championships. Her discus toss of 53.31m (174-11) at the Nigerian Games also set a new Ivy League standard.
She would go on to finish ninth in the shot put at the Commonwealth Games before taking fourth at the African Championships. Her top finish at the African Championships was a silver medal in the discus, marking her first international medal.
